Midweek Mini: “Does It Make Sense?” Is the Wrong Question
If you learned to read before the mid-2000s — or if your child is in an early elementary classroom right now — there is a good chance you have encountered something called three-cueing. You may not know it by that name, but you have seen it in action.
It looks like this. A child gets to a word they don’t know. The teacher says: “Look at the picture. Think about what would make sense. What does the word start with?” The child makes a guess. Sometimes it’s right. The lesson moves on.
This approach — also called MSV, for the three types of cues it uses: Meaning, Structure, and Visual — was developed in the 1960s and spread through reading classrooms for decades. The idea behind it was that skilled readers use context and pictures to figure out unknown words, so children should learn to do the same.
There is one problem. That idea is wrong.
Research on how skilled readers actually process text tells us the opposite. Skilled readers do not guess words from context — they recognize them instantly, letter by letter, because years of phonics instruction built automatic word recognition. Three-cueing is still found in many K-2 classrooms today — but the evidence supporting it simply isn’t there. When children are taught to guess rather than decode, they are learning a strategy that works on easy, predictable text and fails on harder text, exactly when they need it most. Asking “does it make sense?” has a place — but after the word has been decoded, as a confirmation check, not as the first move.
The child who guesses “horse” for “pony” because the picture shows a small horse is not reading. They are pattern-matching. And the longer that habit is practiced, the harder it is to replace with actual decoding.
Whether you are a parent or a teacher, it is worth knowing what this looks like in practice. When a child gets stuck on a word, the most helpful prompt is not “what would make sense?” It is “look at each letter and sound it out.” Once they have decoded the word, then asking whether it makes sense is a great way to confirm they got it right. That order — decode first, confirm after — is what the research supports.
