What Your Child’s Brain Does With “The” — And Why Flash Cards Are Not the Answer
Most of us learned to read common words the same way we learned our multiplication tables.
Flash cards. Repetition. Say it until it sticks.
“The.” “Said.” “Was.” “They.” “Where.” Stack of cards on the kitchen table, someone holding them up one by one, child saying the word or not saying it. The ones that stuck, stuck. The ones that did not — you just kept going through the deck.
It felt like the right approach. It was how we were taught. And now many of us are sitting at that same kitchen table, holding up those same cards with our own children, using the same method our parents used with us. Teachers are doing the same thing — sending home word lists, running flash card drills, posting words on the wall and expecting repetition to do the work. Not because anyone is wrong to try. Because this is what was passed down, generation to generation, as the way you teach these words.
The problem is not the child. It is not laziness. It is not lack of focus or effort or desire to please. The research is clear on this: the flash card approach to learning common words does not match how the brain actually stores words. For many children it works well enough — until it does not. For others it never quite takes hold, no matter how many times they go through the deck.
Understanding what the brain actually does with these words changes everything about how we teach them.
What We Call These Words — and Why It Matters
Before we go further, a quick note on terminology — because this is one of those areas where the same thing gets called many different names depending on who is talking.
You probably know these as sight words. That is the term most parents grew up with and most flash card sets use. But researchers use “sight word” to mean something different — any word a reader recognizes instantly and automatically, regardless of whether it is common or unusual, or how it is spelled. By that definition, a skilled reader has thousands of sight words. “Photosynthesis” can be a sight word if you have read it enough times to recognize it immediately.
The words on those flash card sets are more accurately called high-frequency words — words that appear so often in written English that readers need to recognize them quickly. Some people call them high-utility words or sometimes irregularly spelled words. High-frequency words is the term most commonly used in classrooms and state standards, and that is what we will use here.
The naming matters because it shapes how we think about teaching. If we call them “sight words,” we assume children learn them by sight — by memorizing what they look like. If we call them high-frequency words, the question becomes: what is the most effective way for the brain to learn any word? And the answer to that question has changed how researchers and teachers think about instruction.
The Lists Have Their Place
Most parents know the Dolch and Fry word lists — the collections of high-frequency words that appear most often in early reading texts. Words like “the,” “and,” “said,” “was,” “they,” “where,” “could.” These lists were developed with a legitimate purpose: children who can read these words automatically are freed up to focus their attention on decoding the less familiar words around them.
The lists themselves are not the problem. The problem is the strategy most commonly used to teach them: show the card, say the word, repeat until memorized. That strategy is built on an assumption about how the brain works that the research does not support.
What the Brain Actually Does
Here is where the brain science article from earlier in this series becomes directly relevant.
You may remember the idea of the reading superhighway — the pathway that allows skilled readers to recognize words almost instantly, without having to sound them out letter by letter. That superhighway, as neuroscientist Stanislas Dehaene’s research shows, is not built through repetition alone. It is built through a process researchers call orthographic mapping — in plain terms, the way the brain permanently bonds a word’s spelling, sounds, and meaning together.
Orthographic mapping is the process the brain uses to store words permanently. Researcher Linnea Ehri, who has studied this process for decades, describes it as the mental bonding of three things: a word’s spelling, its sounds, and its meaning. When those three elements are linked together in memory, a word becomes truly known — instantly recognizable every time it appears.
Psychologist and reading researcher David Kilpatrick has described orthographic mapping as the most important reading discovery that most educators have never heard of. The key insight: words are not stored in the brain as visual shapes, the way a logo or a picture might be. They are stored by connecting the letters in a word to the sounds those letters represent. Phonics, in other words, is not just for sounding out unfamiliar words. It is the process by which all words — including high-frequency words — become permanently stored in memory.
For typically developing readers, this process is remarkably efficient. Research cited by Kilpatrick suggests that once a child successfully decodes a word — connecting its letters to its sounds — it may take as few as one to four encounters with that word before it is permanently stored and instantly recognizable.
Repetition of a visual shape, without that sound-to-letter connection, does not trigger the same process. This is why children can see a flash card dozens of times and still not remember the word reliably — and why, when the card is put away, the word disappears from memory.
Why Pure Memorization Creates Problems
If you read the earlier article in this series on three-cueing, you will recognize a familiar pattern here. Three-cueing teaches children to look at the first letter of an unknown word and think about what would make sense in context — a strategy built on pictures and context rather than the sounds in the word, one that goes around phonics rather than through it. Pure memorization of high-frequency words by shape trains the same habit: use visual cues rather than decode.
Both approaches feel like they are working in the early grades, when words are short, visually distinctive, and few in number. Both start to break down as texts become more complex, words become more numerous and similar-looking, and the visual memory strategy can no longer keep up.
Kilpatrick’s work points to another consequence: children who never build the phonics foundation needed for orthographic mapping struggle to store new words efficiently regardless of how many times they encounter them. Where a typically developing reader might need one to four exposures to lock in a new word, a child without that foundation may need many more — and still not retain it reliably. This is not a memory problem. It is a missing foundation problem.
A Better Way: Flash Words and Heart Words
Researchers Linda Farrell, Michael Hunter, and Tina Osenga, writing for Reading Rockets, propose a more effective model for teaching high-frequency words — one that puts phonics at the center where it belongs.
Their framework divides high-frequency words into two categories:
Flash Words are high-frequency words that follow the phonics patterns a child has already been taught. Words like “and,” “him,” “will,” and “get” are perfectly decodable — meaning a child can sound them out using the phonics they already know. There is nothing irregular about them. Children do not need to memorize these words as shapes. They need to decode them. With enough successful decoding encounters, those words will become automatic on their own through orthographic mapping. Teaching them as memorization words misses the opportunity to reinforce the very phonics instruction children are receiving.
Heart Words are high-frequency words that contain a part that does not yet follow the phonics rules a child has been taught, or that is genuinely irregular. Words like “said,” “was,” and “they” fall into this category — though with an important distinction. Some Heart Words are temporarily irregular, meaning the spelling pattern is one the child simply has not been taught yet. Once they learn that pattern, the word becomes fully decodable. Others are always irregular — their spelling does not follow standard phonics rules regardless of what patterns a child knows. Either way, the approach is not pure memorization, and it is not pure decoding either. It is a combination: children decode the parts of the word they can, using their phonics knowledge, and learn by heart only the specific part that is irregular or that uses a pattern they have not yet been taught.
Take the word “said.” The /s/ and /d/ sounds follow the phonics rules perfectly. The middle sound — written as “ai” but pronounced like a short e — is the irregular part. A child learning “said” should decode the s and the d, recognize that they know those sounds, and learn by heart that in this particular word, “ai” makes an unexpected sound. The heart is small. The decoding does most of the work.
This approach matters because it keeps phonics at the center of the process. Instead of teaching children that some words are learned by sounding out and others are learned by memorizing, it teaches them that all words can be approached systematically — and that even irregular words make more sense than they appear to at first.
What About Older Readers?
Many children in the upper elementary grades and beyond were taught to memorize high-frequency words by shape in the early grades. Some of them built strong reading skills anyway — because they had strong phonemic awareness and phonics foundations that allowed orthographic mapping to develop despite the instruction. Others hit a ceiling.
If a child in your life is in the upper elementary grades or older and still struggling with word recognition — still guessing at words, still failing to remember common words from one reading to the next — the most important question is whether their phonological awareness and phonics foundation is solid. That foundation is what makes orthographic mapping possible, at any age.
The research on intervention for older struggling readers is encouraging but honest: progress is possible, and phonological awareness and phonics instruction remain the most important tools. Research by Kilpatrick and O’Brien reviewing intervention studies found that children who receive targeted support in phonological awareness alongside phonics show meaningful improvement in word reading — substantially stronger gains than phonics instruction alone. The path is the same as it always was, but it just requires more intentional effort when it has been missed.
What Parents and Teachers Can Do
1. Ask how high-frequency words are being taught
If your child’s classroom is using flash cards as the primary method, it is worth a conversation with the teacher. Ask whether the school’s approach connects high-frequency word instruction to phonics — whether children are being taught to decode the parts of those words they can, and to learn by heart only the truly irregular parts.
2. Decode first — always
When your child encounters a high-frequency word they do not recognize, the first move should always be to try to sound it out, not to guess from context or from memory. Even if the word has an irregular part, decoding what they can is the right starting point. Support them through it rather than supplying the word immediately.
3. Point out the regular parts
When a word like “said” trips a child up, walk through it together. “What sounds do you know in this word? You know the s sound and the d sound. The middle part, ai, makes a short e sound in this word — that is the part we have to learn by heart.” Making the structure visible builds the mapping process.
4. For teachers: sort your word wall
Look at the high-frequency words you are teaching and ask: which of these are actually decodable with what my students already know? Those words should be decoded, not memorized. Reserve the “learn by heart” approach for the parts of words that cannot yet be decoded — noting whether that irregularity is temporary (a pattern the child has not yet been taught and will eventually decode fully) or permanent (a spelling that does not follow standard phonics rules no matter how much a child learns).
5. Build phonics alongside word reading
High-frequency word instruction works best when it is connected to systematic phonics instruction — not treated as a separate track. The more phonics knowledge a child has, the more of any word they can decode, and the less they need to learn by heart.
The Bottom Line
The goal of high-frequency word instruction has always been right: children need to recognize common words quickly and automatically so their attention is free for meaning. As we explored in the fluency article, when word recognition becomes automatic, the brain stops spending its limited mental energy on decoding — and comprehension gets room to run. The method — memorize the whole word as a shape — was based on a misunderstanding of how the brain actually stores words.
The brain does not learn words by their shape. It learns them by connecting spelling to sound. Phonics is not just the path to decoding unfamiliar words — it is the foundation for building a permanent reading vocabulary. Every word a child successfully decodes has the potential to become a word they will recognize instantly for the rest of their lives.
Flash cards do not build that. Phonics does.
