How to Embed Reading Instruction in Content Area Teaching
When I was teaching, I made a decision that changed how I thought about reading instruction. I stopped treating science and social studies as separate from my reading instruction and started weaving them directly into my literacy block. We practiced reading skills with science textbooks. We worked on comprehension strategies using primary sources in social studies. We annotated, questioned, and discussed texts that were genuinely complex, genuinely interesting, and genuinely connected to what we were already studying.
My students were engaged in a way they hadn’t been with reading worksheets. They tackled difficult texts because they had a reason to. And they built strategies that would serve them far beyond my classroom, because those strategies were attached to real knowledge, real curiosity, and real content.
The research, it turns out, agrees.
The Problem With Keeping Reading in Its Lane
In many schools, reading instruction happens in the ELA block. Science and social studies happen separately, often in whatever time is left, and are frequently the first subjects cut when test prep pressure mounts. This division feels logical. But it creates a problem that shows up most sharply around third or fourth grade, when students transition from learning to read to reading to learn.
That transition depends on background knowledge. A child who can decode every word on a page but knows nothing about the topic will struggle to understand what they are reading. Comprehension is not just a skill. It is a transaction between the text and what the reader already knows. The richer the knowledge a child brings to a text, the more the text yields.
When we cut science and social studies to make more time for reading skills, we are not helping reading. We are quietly undermining it. We are taking away the very content that gives reading strategies something to grip.
The goal of reading instruction — what standards documents call “college and career ready” — is the ability to grapple with complex texts in the real world. That means a college syllabus. A legal document. A technical manual for industrial equipment. A medical form. An insurance policy. None of those texts read like a leveled reader or a skills worksheet. The habits students need to navigate them are built over years of reading increasingly complex material across every subject, with adults who teach them how to approach it.
What the Research Shows
The case for integrating literacy and content area instruction is not new, but the evidence supporting it has grown stronger and more precise in recent years.
James Kim and colleagues at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education have tested the Model of Reading Engagement (MORE) across two randomized controlled trials involving more than 5,000 students across 60 elementary schools. MORE is a content literacy intervention that integrates thematic science and social studies units directly into early literacy instruction from first through third grade. Across both studies, students in MORE classrooms demonstrated faster growth in reading comprehension, reduced summer learning loss, and substantially stronger science-related reading comprehension than peers in control classrooms. Importantly, these gains persisted into later grades, more than a year after the formal intervention ended.
These findings align with broader research. A 2022 meta-analysis by Hwang, Cabell, and Joyner examined whether building content knowledge during literacy instruction improves vocabulary and comprehension across the elementary years. Across the studies they analyzed, the pattern was consistent: when science and social studies content is intentionally integrated into literacy teaching, students show measurable gains in both content knowledge and reading comprehension, with gains that are moderate but consistent across studies.
The pattern holds across student populations as well. Connor and colleagues (2017), in a K–4 study of integrated content-area literacy instruction, found that teaching science and social studies units within the literacy block increased students’ content knowledge and informational text reading skills. These improvements were evident across a wide range of demographic backgrounds, suggesting that content-rich literacy instruction benefits diverse learners.
Taken together, the conclusion is clear: literacy and content knowledge are not competing priorities. They are mutually reinforcing. Teach rich content well, and reading improves. Use that content to practice reading, and students retain more of both.
Why It Works
The cognitive reason for this is something we’ve covered in the memory article in this series. Background knowledge is not decorative. It is structural. When a student already knows something about a topic, new text on that topic processes faster, requires less cognitive effort, and sticks longer. Think of it like a computer’s RAM — the temporary processing power that keeps everything running smoothly. A student whose long-term memory already holds a rich framework about ecosystems is not filling the RAM from scratch when they encounter a new text on the topic. They are retrieving and extending. The reader is adding to a framework that already exists — and that makes all the difference.
Content area reading does something else too: it gives reading strategies a genuine purpose. When students are taught to “ask a question while you read,” the instruction lands differently if they are reading about something they care about, are curious about, or that has a genuine purpose in their lives. The strategy stops being a technique to practice and starts being a tool to use. Students who have learned to question sources in a social studies unit carry that habit into everything they read. That transfer is what reading instruction is ultimately for.
There is also the matter of vocabulary. Academic vocabulary, the kind that appears in textbooks and complex texts across every subject, is best learned in context, connected to ideas and concepts rather than memorized from a list. A student who reads about photosynthesis, discusses it, writes about it, and reads about it again has encountered the word chlorophyll in a web of meaning. That web is far more durable than any flashcard.
What Content Area Reading Actually Looks Like
Embedding reading instruction in content area teaching does not mean abandoning your science or social studies curriculum to run a reading lesson. It means using the texts students are already reading as the site of reading instruction. Here are the principles, with a few concrete anchors.
Pre-teach vocabulary before students encounter it in text
Choose five to eight words from a unit’s core texts that are both essential to understanding the content and likely to recur in future academic reading. Introduce them before reading, not as a list to memorize but as concepts to build. Show students how the word connects to what they already know. Return to them during and after reading. Vocabulary instruction is most effective when it is direct, repeated, and tied to meaningful content.
Build a schema before reading begins
A schema is a mental framework: a rough map of how the ideas in a topic relate to each other. Before a unit on ecosystems, before a chapter on the Civil War, before a lesson on fractions, help students build a schema by connecting the topic to something they already know. A brief discussion, a concept map, a short read-aloud that introduces the big idea: this is not time lost from reading. It is the thing that makes the reading possible.
The MORE study found that when students developed a schema, such as how scientists study past events, they were able to transfer that framework to new topics they had never encountered before. Students who had studied paleontologists examining fossils were better equipped to read about archaeologists studying ancient cities, because the schema transferred even when the content was different.
Use complex text, and teach students how to approach it
A science textbook is not an easy read. It is dense, technical, and full of domain-specific vocabulary. That difficulty is not a problem to route around. It is the point. Teach students to slow down when a text gets hard. Model what rereading looks like. Show them how to use headings, diagrams, captions, and text structure to orient themselves before diving in. These are not generic reading strategies: they are the strategies that readers of informational text specifically need, and they are best learned on real informational texts.
It is worth being direct about what we mean by complex text here. A nonfiction passage in an ELA anthology and a chapter from a fifth-grade science textbook are not the same thing. The anthology passage has been edited for readability and is often stripped of the dense vocabulary, diagrams, data tables, and domain-specific text features that make subject-area texts genuinely challenging. Both have value. But if the goal is to prepare students to read the texts they will encounter in upper grades and beyond, the textbook, the primary source, and the informational trade book are often doing work the anthology passage cannot.
Make discussion part of the reading routine
Reading comprehension deepens in conversation. After reading a science passage or a primary source, structured discussion helps students process what they understood, surface what confused them, and build on each other’s thinking. It does not need to be elaborate. Even a few minutes of structured partner talk after a reading, where students are asked to summarize the main idea and identify one question they still have, produces measurable comprehension gains.
Connect reading and writing
The MORE study found that students in content-rich literacy classrooms significantly outperformed peers on argumentative writing tasks that required claims, evidence, and reasoning. This is not surprising. Students who have read deeply about a topic have something to write about. Writing about what you have read is itself a powerful comprehension tool: it forces students to organize, evaluate, and express what they know, which deepens understanding and strengthens retention.
What About Novel Studies?
This same principle applies even when the anchor text is a novel. If your class is reading Johnny Tremain, you do not have to limit the reading experience to the novel itself. Pair it with the Declaration of Independence. Add a short informational article about daily life in colonial Boston or the economics of the apprentice system. Include a primary source letter from a soldier or a colonist. Every text you add deepens the schema students bring to the novel, makes the vocabulary more meaningful, and gives reading strategies a richer context in which to operate.
This works whether the novel is a class read-aloud or an independent reading assignment. The goal is the same: surround the central text with content that builds the knowledge students need to read it deeply. A student who knows something about the Revolutionary War reads Johnny Tremain differently than one who doesn’t. The novel becomes a richer experience, and the informational texts become more meaningful because of the story. Each type of reading strengthens the other.
A Note for Secondary Teachers
Everything above applies at the secondary level, but with one important addition. As students move into middle and high school, the texts in each subject become genuinely different in their structure, their conventions, and the habits of mind they require.
A history text is not read the same way a chemistry text is read. A historian reads primary sources skeptically, asking who wrote this, when, and with what motivation. A scientist reads a methods section evaluating whether the evidence is reliable. A mathematician reads every word with precise attention because a single preposition can change the meaning entirely. These are not the same set of reading skills.
Researchers Timothy and Cynthia Shanahan have described this as disciplinary literacy: the idea that each subject has its own reading demands, and that secondary content-area teachers are better positioned than ELA teachers to model how an expert in their field actually reads. This is worth knowing, and worth a longer conversation than this article can hold. But the foundation is the same: reading is not separate from content. It is part of how students learn content, in every subject, at every grade level.
What This Means for Your Classroom
You do not need a new curriculum to start embedding reading instruction in your content area teaching. You need the texts you are already using, a deliberate decision to treat those texts as reading instruction, and a handful of strategies that make the reading visible.
Pre-teach the vocabulary. Build the schema. Slow down for complex text and model what that looks like. Talk about the reading. Write about it. Return to the same topic from different angles over time.
None of this is separate from teaching your content. It is how students actually learn your content, deeply enough to use it when they encounter it again.
And it is how they build the reading habits that will carry them far beyond your classroom — into college lecture halls, legal documents, technical manuals, and every other complex text the world will put in front of them. That is what “college and career ready” actually means. And it starts here.
